Five Traits That Make a Good Leader

five traits that make a good leader

Leaders are everywhere, and the special thing about them is that each one is different. There is no “perfect” mold to create a leader—each leader is entirely unique and has their own distinct sets of skills and traits. But while each one has their own set of traits, there are a few traits that are more common in leaders than others. Here are five top traits that are shown to make a good leader:

These are just a few of the traits that make for an amazing leader. Remember, the saying goes that “leaders aren’t born—they’re made.” Anyone can be a leader if they practice and apply these traits to their own leadership styles.

  • Passion
This seems pretty obvious, but to be a good leader one must be passionate. Very, very rarely do people succeed by just hoping for the best—they have to work hard, and work even when things seem like they aren’t going the right way. Leaders are passionate about what they do and why they do it, and they inspire the people around them to be passionate, too. This instills a unified goal and purpose for your business, and creates a sense of camaraderie among your employees

  • Honesty
Good leaders are trusted by those they are leading. One of the best ways to gain trust from your employees is through honesty. By being transparent, a leader is able to show their employees that they are willing to be open and forthcoming about all news—good and bad. This shows integrity, and proves that the leader is on their side. Honesty is also applicable when leaders need to provide feedback, and shows that they value another key trait: communication.

  • Communication
Communication is always a necessity in any relationship, but it’s especially important in a leadership capacity. Open communication allows for groups to set clear, consistent goals and also allows for any new developments or roadblocks to be discussed so all members of the group are kept up to date. Leaders can communicate in many different forms—face-to-face conversations, instant messaging chats, speeches, emails and more!

  • Responsibility
A good leader always takes responsibility for their actions, and admits when they have made a mistake instead of pinning the blame on others. Leaders are also responsible in the sense that they identify a task that needs to be done and they follow through to the end of it. They are responsible for meeting their own goals and making sure that others are meeting theirs, too. Responsibility takes form in many different ways as a leader, and it is one of the most valuable traits one can possess.

  • Empathy
Empathy is a key building block to creating strong relationships. By trying to understand and relate to their coworkers, good leaders are showing that they care about them on a human level. Showing that they care builds trust, and it also creates a positive work environment where workers feel like their voices are not just listened to, but that they are heard and understood.
